Tesla Robo-taxi Revealed on October 10, 2024 / China Since 2020?

On October 10, 2024, Elon Musk unveiled Tesla's robo-taxi, which has piqued interest in autonomous taxis, expected to soon become commercialized. However, such self-driving robo-taxis are already providing services in major Chinese cities like Guangzhou and Shanghai.

So, the question arises: how did China manage to commercialize robo-taxi services so quickly? The answer lies in continuous investment in autonomous driving technology development during the COVID-19 pandemic when other countries, including the US, delayed their efforts. Robo-taxis provide a service where vehicles autonomously transport passengers to their destinations.

Autonomous driving is divided into levels 1-5, with robo-taxis requiring level 4 or higher, necessitating massive driving data. During the pandemic, China consistently collected data used for robo-taxis, enabling them to quickly commercialize the service compared to other countries.

Currently, WeRide in Guangzhou covers an area of 145 km² with its robo-taxis. Using robo-taxis is also convenient: users can call them through a smartphone app, select a destination, and pay via smart payment options like WeChat Pay or Alipay.

When did China start providing robo-taxi services?

In June 2020, Didi Chuxing first conducted a pilot operation of robo-taxis in the suburbs of Shanghai. Presently, Baidu offers the service in Changsha, and WeRide in Guangzhou, marking China as the fastest country to provide commercial robo-taxi services globally.

Not only in robo-taxis, but China is also heavily investing in other fourth industrial technologies like aerospace, semiconductors, artificial intelligence, and secondary batteries, ranking second after the United States. On January 3, 2019, China sent the Chang'e 4 lunar rover, making it the first to explore the far side of the moon.

While the ongoing US-China conflicts have temporarily slowed China's economic and technological advancements, investments in technological development are expected to continue.
